Referee: Chris Foy
Appointed to Select Group Referees list in 2001, his first game, Bolton Wanderers v Charlton Athletic. Referee of the 2007 FA Trophy Final.
Week 8

Hello Chris, just a quick one... What are your best ways to man-manage players? Do you use humour, maintain a stricter stance, try to come across as just a normal guy, or even a teacher type etc...
I am definitely not a teacher type and I am not degrading that profession. Simply because I am not from that background. Being yourself is the best way. Humour is great in some circumstances but dangerous in others. The only way, is to be open and honest and don't be afraid to admit to mistakes. But don't make too many otherwise you lose credibility. The best way is to enjoy it and when you are the players will recognise it and play their part.

Hey, this proberly sounds like a stupid question. But i was wondering, as a referee do you talk to the players through out the game I.E Äs two players are tussling "Hands down" or "NO foul". If you do, are you still able to do this in a loud stadium? Or do you have to change the way you referee?
I used to speak all the time. Some referees still do however I have eased off a lot. I only speak when I fear a situation may develop. It is something that comes with experience. There is nothing more embarrassing when you try and engage a player in conversation only for him to ignore you. Chose your players wisely.
