Referee: Steve Tanner
Joined the Select Group Referees list in 2007 and took charge of his first game, Wigan Athletic v Middlesbrough.
Week 2
Chris Friman, England
How do you deal with the crowd shouting insulting abuse at you?
I am so focused on the match, believe it or not that I do not actually hear the crowd. You learn to shut out all outside interference and concentrate on the job in hand.
Ryan Hibbard, England
I've noticed that you referee sometimes with a green whistle. Is there any reason for choosing different coloured whistles?
There is no particular reason for using different coloured whistles. I have traditionally always used a black whistle and carry a green whistle as a spare should anything happen to my first choice one.
Ian Browne, England
What does your training involve?
All of our training is set by the sports scientist Matthew Weston and as referees we wear heart rate monitors which enable us to monitor our training intensities and also provide Matthew with information which will help him to establish whether the training prescribed meets our demands or whether he would need to give us a more individualised plan. A typical weeks training will be as follows: MONDAY Conditioning exercises TUESDAY High intensity training WEDNESDAY Rest day THURSDAY Speed endurance training FRIDAY Speed training SATURDAY Match day SUNDAY Recovery training
