Steve Tanner has been part of a UEFA trial using two extra match officials
UEFA have been trialling the use of two extra match officials, during the UEFA European U19 Championships in Slovenia and our very own Steve Tanner has been part of the experiment.
As well as the usual match referee and his two assistants – two extra assistant will be placed behind the goalline to focus on incidents which happen in the penalty area, such as fouls or misconduct.
Further trials are planned later this year in the U19 qualifying round, in Groups 1 and 7, in Hungary and Cyprus.
Steve Tanner, was one of just five international referees involved in this experiment, which comes after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved the test at a meeting in Scotland last year.
