TRAINING DAY A SUCCESS
PGMOL Select Assistant Referees’ Training Day
The event at Warwick was attended by 43 Assistant Referees and new Assistant Referees’ coaches Ralph Bone and Paul Canadine.
The emphasis of the morning session was the offside rule, with the officials undergoing two very different sessions. First they were shown a DVD of 80 offside situations and asked to call the decision, before going out onto the training pitch where various offside situations were staged, and each Assistant Referee had to make nine offside decisions.
After lunch attentions turned to psychology with the group given a presentation by sports psychologist Ian Maynard, who spoke about coping with errors on the field of play, in particular cognitive restructuring - identifying negative thoughts and how to work out a strategy for blocking them and replacing them with a positive. The session’s aim is to help Assistant Referee’s to recover quickly and not allow negative thoughts to take over and have a detrimental effect on the rest of the performance.
An interactive session with Paul Rejer followed, where the group were shown a number of incidents and decisions from the season so far in the Premier League and Football League.
The clips included offsides, disallowed goals and penalty decisions, where the Assistant Referee was personally involved and goal-line incidents which have resulted in goals being awarded or disallowed.
There was a mixture of excellence and indifferent practice with each Assistant Referee involved asked to share his thought process. If correct, it was important to share that with the group for them to learn and improve.
On the occasions that were deemed incorrect the honesty by each individual Assistant Referee was extremely refreshing and the open and honest review of such situations should have a beneficial impact on similar decision making in the future.
The day was concluded with Dave Bryan formally receiving his medal for his appointment as 5th Official in last season’s Carling Cup Final.
