Select Group Phil Dowd

Appointed to the Select Group Referees list in 2001. Appointed as FA Cup Final 4th Official 2006, the last FA Cup Final at the Millennium.

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I was an average player and decided whilst on strike during 1984 miner’s dispute to learn the laws of the game. I enrolled on a course and after passing my exam did youth games in the local leagues.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Has to be the call to be apart of the select group referees.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

Liverpool v Everton the atmosphere was electric and a dream come true.

What are your aims as a Select Group Referee?

To be consistent and enjoy my career to be the best I can and give 100%

What skills do you think you need to become a professional referee?

Be confident, a good listener and believe in your own ability

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

Frank Doherty a local referee who is no longer with us, he would come to my games and was a sounding board for my problems, Stuart Harris from Tuesdays who made me believe that my dreams can become a reality.

In your opinion who is/was the best referee? 

Pierre Luigi Collina and Jack Taylor both different styles and both commanded respect from players and officials. From the present it had to be Graham Poll could handle any game any time and always had the answer to anything that was thrown at him. The future watch out for Mark Clattenburg and Howard Webb both will be capable of refereeing a world cup.
