National Group Carl Boyeson
Central heating technician who started refereeing on the Hull Sunday League in 1992, promoted via the Northern Premier league to the National List of assistant referees in 1996, spent two seasons on the SG list until reaching the National List of referees in 2002 Has refereed two semi finals of the FA Vase and was 4th Official for the FA Youth Cup Final in 2000. Enjoys watching most sports and playing Golf.
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
I always had an interest in the laws of the game and a gentlemen form work Walter Jude who also looks after the guests in the Directors box at Hull City said you’ll never be a pro footballer so why not referee pro football. I was 22 at the time and took the referee course almost immediately and began refereeing the following season.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Promotion on the select group of Assistant Referees in 2000 and promotion on to the National list of Referees in 2002.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
3 games stand out August 2000 travelled abroad to Georgia to officiate on a Champions league game with Uriah Rennie as referee, December 2001 Assistant Referee Liverpool v Arsenal when they where 1st and 2nd in the Premier League there’s not many bigger games on the Premier League calendar and March 2002 Newcastle United v Man City in FA Cup 5th Round, it was Kevin Keegans 1st time back at St James Park as manager of another club, what an atmosphere!!!
What are your aims as a National List Referee?
To week in week out produce top performances as a National List Referee and who knows promotion onto the Select Group of Referees
What skills do you think you need to become a referee?
I feel you need man management skills in communicating with players and managers also team leader skills as you lead your team from the front and you need to be dedicated to the job like training on cold wet evenings after work
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
In the early days a guy from Hull Sunday League referees Colin Rendor looked after me and pointed me in the right direction then as soon as I moved onto the Unibond League and above Ian Blanchard monitored my progress and offered advice when necessary
In your opinion who is/was the best referee?
The best ref I ever watched was Collina the best refs I worked with where Paul Durkin and Alan Wiley they all had similar attributes but the biggest attribute they all had was they almost always got the big decision right from credible viewing positions
