National Group Phil Crossley

Phil didn’t take up the whistle until he was 29, thereafter made rapid steps through the Suburban, Isthmian and Panel Leagues until his promotion to the National List of referees in 2002. Was 4th official for the 2005 FL Cup Final and has refereed the FA Women’s’ Cup Final, FA Vase Final, and a FL League One Play Off Final in addition to refereeing matches in the Premier League. Has missed season 2007-08 due to injuries sustained in a game at Derby County late last season.

How did you get introduced into refereeing?  

Following an Achilles injury whilst playing. Read an advertisement in a match day program. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far?  

Having been appointed to Referee a couple of Premiership fixtures coupled with the answer below.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?  

4th Official for the Carling Cup Final Liverpool v Chelsea and Refereeing the Division One Play-off Final Sheffield Wednesday v Hartlepool United. The reason for these choices is that I was entrusted by the PGMOL to have the attributes, man management skills and ability to cope with the various demands placed upon an official for such prestigious games.

What are your aims as a National List Referee?  

To Referee in a consistently good manner with the hopes of again receiving Premiership games in the future as well as being involved the important end of season games. 

What skills do you think you need to become a referee? 

Dedication, Fitness, Self belief and strong man management skills 

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?  

Initially my local County FA (London) then peers and the PGMOL. For the initial training and then the subsequent continued education in trying to become better each and every game.

In your opinion who is/was the best referee?  

Impossible to say, referees have to have many attributes no one referee has them all therefore the best would be someone who could incorporate the best of the best.
