National Group Graham Horwood
A married man with two young children Graham stared refereeing at fifteen years of age and reached the National list of assistant referees in 2001 after progressing through the South Midlands and Isthmian Leagues. He was promoted to the List of Panel referees in 2005 and the National List of referees in 2007, the year in which he refereed a Conference Play Off Semi-final.
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
At the age of 16, two of my team mates from my Sunday side completed the exam so I thought it would be a good idea. Used to referee the juniors in the morning and play in the afternoon. Better way of earning money than doing a paper round.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Refereeing the 2007 Conference play off semi-final between Exeter City and Oxford United.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
The conference play off final above. I had been notified of my promotion to the National List of referees and didn't expect the appointment as I thought my colleagues would be appointed. To get the appointment and find out that it was to be broadcast live was excellent and then to find out that a couple of my long time mates were to be the assistants just made it better. Most importantly the game went off without controversy, the atmosphere was superb. A day I will remember for a long time.
What are your aims as a National List Referee?
To continue to try and learn from my more senior colleagues. Ultimately to referee at the highest level possible.
What skills do you think you need to become a referee?
An understanding of the game from a players point of view, good communication / people management skills as well. You also need to be able to remain calm and logical when put under pressure. You also need to be able to like you are enjoying yourself even when the pressure is on!
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
The secretary of my first senior league Eric Harrison, who insisted I took promotion to try and officiate at a higher level. At that time, progression hadn't crossed my mind. He has continued to offer support and guidance and is still a frequent guest to my games. Of course none of this is possible without the support of your family to allow you spend so much time refereeing matches and training!
In your opinion who is/was the best referee?
I have a lot of time for Jack Taylor who continues to provide support to match officials and is always worth speaking to. Of the current referees, Howard Webb is in my opinion the best referee. Always able to look calm, unflustered and gives a very Authorative presence on the field of play.
