SG Asst Referee Stephen Artis

Steve was promoted to the Select Group of Assistant Referees in 2006 and also in that year was appointed as an Assistant Referee to a Football League Championship Play Off Semi Final.

How did you get introduced into refereeing? 

A colleague at work was going on a course to become a referee and I went with him to see what it was all about. It was interesting so I started refereeing and enjoyed it.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?


Getting on to the Select Group of Assistant Referee’s.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?
 

25 August 2006, Liverpool v West Ham United. My first Premier League appointment, the first is always special.

What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?

To be an Assistant Referee on the FA Cup Final.

What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?


Some of the skills needed are, to be calm and confident, to know when to give a decision and when not to, to not be frightened to make a big decision when its needed, to support your referee, a sound knowledge of the laws and the application of them, a high level of fitness as fit in body means fit in mind,

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
 

John Elwin. A former Select Group Assistant and my mentor throughout my career as a Referee and Assistant Referee.

In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee? 

Phil Sharp. A complete professional.
