Assistant Referee Chris Akers
Location: S. Yorkshire
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
I was an average (at best) football player – making up the numbers on most Sunday mornings. With my dad being a Referee he suggested taking the local referees course and staying involved in the game.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Without a shadow of doubt my appointment to the FA Cup 1st Round - Altrincham v Luton. A great feeling walking out knowing you are part of a team officiating in the world’s greatest cup competition.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
My first Football League game on the opening day of the season – Bradford v Notts County. The buzz around Valley Parade was incredible and a game I will never forget.
What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?
To enjoy every game I officiate in and progress to the highest possible level – whether as an Assistant or a Referee. However to be involved in an FA Cup Final at Wembley is my ultimate ambition.
What skills do you think you need to become a assistant referee?
I believe it is a culmination of skills which makes a good Assistant Referee. Fitness, decision making, reading of the game, teamwork, mental strength are all important traits. Most importantly I believe dedication to be vital not just to Assistants but to all Referees.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
There have many big influences in my career from my colleagues at Doncaster RA to Steve Lodge, my current coach. To single out an individual, I would have to say my dad, Nigel. He encouraged me to start refereeing and has provided constant support since. Also, my brother who doesn’t miss a game, and my mum who washes my kit.
In your opinion who is/was the best assistant referee?
Phil Sharp stands out and in my opinion is the country’s top Assistant Referee. Having assisted on a World Cup Final and at an Olympics Games only further proves he has achieved most of what is to be achieved as an Assistant. I also believe Nigel Bannister to be a consistently good Assistant and always officiates with a smile on his face.
