Assistant Referee David Benton
Location: S. Yorkshire
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
I was 15 years old, my brother was playing in an Under 10s match and the Referee didn’t turn up. The manger of the team asked if I knew anything about football and when I said yes he threw me a whistle!
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I think this would have to be an appointment as Assistant Referee in the 4th round of the FA Cup a couple of years ago - Leicester City v Southampton. Either that, or in the same year I was appointed to a third round tie which was Hull City v Aston Villa and it was live on TV. Neale Barry also turned up to watch the game – no pressure!
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
Sunderland v West Bromwich Albion in the Championship live on Sky. The first goal was given by me to Sunderland after the ball had just crossed the line. Either that, or when I was Assistant Referee on a League 2 game where Rochdale beat Stockport 7-2 away from home. Rochdale had seven shots on target that day and scored with every one!
What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?
My aim is to be the best I can possibly be every time I walk on to a football pitch.
What skills do you think you need to become an Assistant Referee?
You need to have tremendous concentration skills as 99% of wrong decisions given by Assistant Referees are through lack of concentration.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
I suppose the man who started it all – Alan Dent, the team manager of my brother’s Under 10s team. In the game these days I would say people like Phil Sharp, Glen Turner, Dave Babski and a good friend of mine Bob Martin (Ex Select Group Assistant Referee). These guys have tremendous experience and are all approachable.
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
Simple – Phil Sharp. The World Cup Final says it all!
