Assistant Referee Lee Betts
Location: Norfolk
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
My Dad used to be involved with the local youth club and they offered to put volunteers on a referees course and, at the age of 17, I passed the referees exam. I did games sporadically early on but started refereeing regularly at the age of 21.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being appointed as Assistant Referee on the FA County Youth Cup Final in 2008 and gaining promotion to the National List of Assistant Referees in the same year.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
It would have to be my appointment to the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup. To be involved at such a stage in this great cup competition was a very proud moment.
What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?
To keep performing to the best of my ability and strive to officiate at the highest level possible. I would also hope to be performing well enough to be considered for another Cup Final appointment in the future.
What skills do you think you need to become an Assistant Referee?
A good level of fitness, concentration, the ability to remain calm under pressure and to believe in your decision making.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
My family have always been a big source of encouragement and support since I started refereeing. Also being part of the first ever FA Young Referee’s Conference really was very influential and, as an inexperienced level six at the time, was the kick-start for me to really focus on improving and progressing up the refereeing ladder. There have also been many colleagues, friends, assessors and coaches who have offered excellent feedback and advice along the way.
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
I believe Phil Sharp was, and still is one of the best Assistants Referees around. Over the last few years fellow Norfolk colleague Darren Cann is someone who I look up to and can learn lots from. His quality of decision making, attention to detail and professionalism is first class and something I would like to emulate as an Assistant Referee.
