Select Group Assistant Profile

Assistant Referee Stuart Burt

Stuart was promoted to the Select Group of Assistant Referees in the summer of 2009

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I was brought a Laws of Association football guide by a friend and there was an advert in there saying, ‘Referees required’. Knowing that my father had been a Referee I thought I would take the course. It proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

From the moment I started to referee I had always wanted to get on to the Football League as there were people in the county who were already officiating on it including Peter Kirkup, Richard Beeby and Peter Walton, and they use to say how enjoyable it was. To have achieved my goal at the age of 26 and after refereeing for only 10 years was an amazing feeling.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

This season I officiated on a Forth Round FA Cup game at Bramall lane, Sheffield United v Charlton Athletic, the biggest game of my career to date and also the most memorable in what is known as the greatest cup competition there is. An amazing experience and in my third year on the National List I was very honoured as well.

What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?

To consistently maintain my performances on every game that I do and to put myself in the frame to gain promotion onto the Select List of Assistant Referees, and further from that to gain FIFA status. Also to enjoy myself, I am in a very privileged position with many people wanting to be in the position that I am in.

What skills do you think you need to become an Assistant Referee?

Very good concentration levels, dedication, and you need to be very keen to listen to any advice passed on to you. Finally good fitness levels for what is becoming a fast game these days.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

I could not mention just one person as there has been several at different stages of my career. I think in the last few years though, Peter Kirkup has been great with me, with helpful hints and tips and general advice as I made my transition in to the professional game.
