Assistant Referee Richard Clark

Location: Northumberland

How did you get introduced into refereeing?   
 
After a football career which consisted of playing both professionally and for the armed forces, I decided enough was enough on the football field as a player and was introduced into referring by local football manager Jimmy Charlton and other friends.
 
What has been the highlight of your career so far?

 
I look at my whole refereeing career so far as a highlight but being promoted onto the National List is the biggest honour I have received.
 
What is the best game you have officiated and why?

 
My first Football League match, Grimsby v Chesterfield, because of the mixed emotions I felt.  The excitement, nerves, adrenaline, the crowd and the pride all rolled into one. Also my first televised match, York v Halifax, is a match I will always remember.

What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?


To be retained on the National List, gaining experience to be promoted to the Select Group.

What skills do you think you need to become an Assistant Referee?

 
Courage for big decisions, fitness and flexibility to be able to work with a number of different colleagues in various situations.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
 
My wife Claire and two young children who have given up family time to allow me to officiate and train. Also my local county FA and representatives, league representatives, assessors, coaches past and present. All the aforementioned have been their through the highs and the lows of my career.

In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?

 
The best Assistant Referee is Phil Sharp for what he has achieved.
