Assistant Referee Martin Coy
Location: Co. Durham
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
I completed my referees training course when at school. I had to give up playing due to a knee injury but wanted to stay involved with the game so I started refereeing at the age of 18.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Promotion to the National List of Assistant Referees and then my first game on the Football League line on 9th August 2009, Accrington Stanley v Aldershot.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
Assistant Referee at the 2008 FA Vase semi-final between Whitley Bay and Lowestoft. This was a prestigious appointment and an amazing game. Lowestoft had won the first leg 4-0 but in front of a full house Whitley Bay were 3-0 up after 30 minutes. In the end Lowestoft ran out 4-3 winners but it was a fantastic afternoon.
What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?
To officiate to the best of my ability and to be promoted to the Select Group of Assistant Referees.
What skills do you think you need to become an Assistant Referee?
Fitness, concentration and the ability to know when to get involved and when not to.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
My parents and family have been the biggest positive influence in my life and my dad has had the biggest influence on my football career. Now I am indebted to my wife who supports me as a National List Official.
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
Phil Sharp.
