National Group Assistant Profile

Assistant Referee Colin Harwood

Location: Gtr Manchester

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I had always enjoyed football but was never any good as a player (two left feet!). I saw a television programme about refereeing and that prompted me to take up the whistle. It seemed an enjoyable way to stay involved in football, which proved to be the case.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I have been lucky enough to serve on the National List of Assistant Referees for a number of seasons, and regard every game as a highlight.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

I was Assistant Referee at the JJB Stadium for Wigan Athletic v Barnsley, their last game of the 2002-03 Football League season. Wigan were promoted to the Premier League so there was a packed stadium and a party atmosphere which made it a memorable day.

What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?

My aim is to finish high enough on the Merit List that I would be considered for promotion to the Select Group Assistant Referee's list. It would also be great to officiate at Wembley Stadium, and experience the special atmosphere there.

What skills do you think you need to become a Assistant Referee?

You need to have a number of key skills including a high level of fitness, ability to concentrate, accurate decision making under pressure, and a thorough understanding of the laws of the game.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

Officiating as a National List Assistant Referee takes up a lot of time, so I would have to say my wife, as she is both understanding and supportive.

In your opinion who is/was the best assistant referee?

I cannot single out any one Assistant Referee as being best, as all Assistant Referees operating within the professional game are officiating at that level because of their high standards.
