Assistant Referee Andrew Hutchinson

How did you get introduced into refereeing?
My father was a referee, officiating in the Football League as an Assistant Referee, so I grew up with it.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I originally started my refereeing career in Wales and I was fortunate to achieve FIFA status as an assistant referee for three years from 1998 to 2000. Then transferring to the English pyramid system in 2002 I was fortunate to achieve a position on the National List.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
During my time as a FIFA Assistant I was appointed to a Champions League qualifier in Iceland - Reykjavik v Birkirkara.
What are your aims as a National List Assistant Referee?
My aims are to continue through the system and to gain promotion to the Select Group.
What skills do you think you need to become a assistant referee?
The ability to concentrate under pressure, confidence to make big decisions, ability to read play regarding offside decisions, to assist the referee, ability to listen to advice and good fitness.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
My father. As he came to watch all my games when I started as a fourteen-year-old, refereeing in the local junior league. He has continued to watch and analyse my performance throughout my career. Also, Mike Dean. When I was involved in the Welsh system back in 2001, Mike came to give a talk at my local RA meeting and after I listening to what could be achieved in England, I made my decision to transfer.
In your opinion who is/was the best assistant referee?
Phil Sharp. Due to his achievement in officiating at the World Cup Final.
