SG Asst Referee Mike Mullarkey
Mike was appointed as a FIFA Assistant Referee in 2007 and has officiated as an Assistant Referee in the 2007 FIFA under 20 World Cup Finals in Canada and the 2006 Football League Two Play-Off Final.
How did you get introduced to Refereeing?
My father used to Referee and was a Football League Linesman for 4 years in the early 1970’s. He got me into Refereeing when it was obvious I was never going to get anywhere as a player. He has continued to be a great support to me ever since.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
The highlights for me have been my nomination to the FIFA List of Assistant Referees. It was totally unexpected and I am delighted to have earned this. This has lead to opportunities such as the FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada and my selection as an Assistant Referee at Euro 2008, which is my overall highlight.
What is the best game you have officiated?
I have been fortunate to have officiated at many top games both domestically and in Europe, but I will always remember my first Premier League game (West Ham v West Bromwich Albion). I was very nervous and then broke my flag in the second half by hitting it on the corner flag when signalling a corner!
What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?
My aim as an Assistant is to support the Referee in the safe delivery of every game I am appointed to. Every game is of huge importance and I aim to walk off from each game knowing I have performed at the best of my ability.
What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?
Aside from the level of physical fitness required to operate at professional level, I think you need to have the mental strength to go about your duties without concern for the crowd and the cameras. On the field, concentration is the biggest skill.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
I owe my father a massive debt for getting me into Refereeing, but my Wife, Ann, has also been a huge influence. Without the support of Ann and my family I would not have achieved what I have. When I need it, Ann is there with encouragement but more often she ensures I keep my feet on the floor!
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
For me it has to be Phil Sharp. To have achieved all the he has in the game and to have performed at the highest level for so many years is a fantastic achievement. In addition, he is a role model and great support for all his colleagues.
