SG Asst Referee Mick Murphy

Mick was promoted to the Select Group of Assistant Referees in 2006 and was appointed as an Assistant Referee in the 2006 Football League Two Play-Off Final and the FA Sunday Cup Final.

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

I started Refereeing in December 1992.  I had previously played football at a local level, but had some serious injuries (Broken leg and dislocated shoulder - 3 times); I wanted to remain involved in football and saw refereeing as an opportunity to satisfy this desire.

Officiating at the Millennium Stadium in the League 2 Play Off Final in May 2006 Grimsby v Cheltenham Town

League 2 Play Off Final 2006 Grimsby Town v Cheltenham Town.  The Stadium, the Fans, the manner in which it was played, the atmosphere, everything about the day was superb!

What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?

To be able to continue as a Select Group Assistant and to be able to contribute at the Highest Level possible.

What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?

Good Communication, Team Player, Concentration, Being in tune with the Referee and his Match Control Strategy, Good Knowledge of Law, Fitness, Good Sense of Humour, Honesty and integrity.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

Keren Barrett.  Coming from Coventry, I have known Keren for a long time and he has encouraged me throughout my Refereeing career.  Keren's dedication and commitment to Referee's at all levels is second to none, in my opinion.

In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?

Phil Sharp.  To be able to Officiate at the World Cup Final doesn't happen by accident.  Phil has been able to officiate in the most important of games, consistently, over a long period of time and this is testament to his "off field" preparation, focus and work rate.
