Select Group of Assistant Referees in 2006 and in the same year appointed to a Football League One Play-Off Semi Final and the FA Youth Challenge Cup Final
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
As a 17 year old I was playing Senior football and refereeing matches for the local Under 14 team which I was helping to manage. In one particular game the opposition manager questioned a decision I had made. I decided to take the course and qualify as a referee to enhance my credibility for future games. I enjoyed the course and things progressed from there.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Confirmation of my promotion to the Select Group of Assistant Referees.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
Football is all about goals and atmosphere so it must be the Carling Cup Quarter Final, Liverpool 3 Arsenal 6 (followed closely by Tottenham Hotspur 4 Aston Villa 4 and Chelsea 4 Aston Villa 4 in the Premier League).
What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?
My aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee are to enjoy my appointments, perform to the best of my ability and to be respected for my performances.
What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?
To become a Select Group Assistant Referee you need many skills. Dedication, a positive attitude towards fitness and a desire to continue learning are important. In addition you need mental strength, a belief in your own ability, the courage to make the big decisions and the capacity to deal with pressure. Finally it is crucial that you are a team player.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
The biggest influences in my career have been my dad for his constant support and advice (especially during the early years), many colleagues along the way and my family with their ongoing support.
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
I've been fortunate to officiate with and benefit from the experience of the ideal role model, Phil Sharp, who has officiated on the ultimate appointment - the World Cup Final.
