SG Asst Referee Simon Beck
Simon was promoted to the Select Group of Assistant Referees in 2007 was appointed as an Assistant Referee to the 2007 Football League One Play-Off Final and the Football League Play-Off Semi Finals in 2007 and 2006.
How did you get introduced into refereeing?
Having played football I picked up an injury requiring surgery so decided not to continue my playing career. My father said that I should try refereeing as a way of staying involved in the game as there was always a need for referees especially young referees.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Receiving notification that I was being promoted to the Select Group of Assistants. It was a great feeling as it was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
Whilst the play off final at the new Wembley was great I would say that being appointed to the second leg of the Youth Cup final in 2007 was the best. This game started a few crazy weeks for me as within a very short space of time I had been appointed to this game, a play off semi final, a play off final and received the letter confirming my inclusion to the Select Group of Assistants.
What are your aims as a Select Group Assistant Referee?
I would like to represent my country at international level and achieve FIFA status. Domestically, I would like to know that when the 'big' games come along I am considered good enough to be awarded such prestigious fixtures.
What skills do you think you need to become a Select Group Assistant Referee?
You need to be dedicated and courageous as the margin of the decisions we make are becoming tighter and tighter. You must be willing to learn from your mistakes and with the level of media attention be prepared to accept criticism.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?
I cannot name just one person as I have been advised & assisted by numerous people over the years. My style of refereeing is a mixture of about 5 different individuals and they know who they are.
In your opinion who is/was the best Assistant Referee?
Anyone who is selected to represent their country at international tournaments could be the 'best' official of his time. For the sheer level of major appointments you would have to say that Phil (Sharp) must rank as one of the best that this country has ever produced.
