Performance Analysis

The PGMOL’s team of Select Group Match Officials are the 21st team in the FA Premier League. They need to follow tough training schedules, prepare well, follow strict nutritional advice, and closely monitor and assess their performances like any other squad of players in the Premiership. And like all the other Premiership teams, who analyse their players’ performances, the Select Group Match Officials, their Divisional Managers and Sports Scientists use world leading sports science technology to help in their analysis of a match officials’ performance.

Why Use Systems such as ProZone for Performance Analysis?

Football is a multi-million pound industry, where the demands for top level players to perform at the highest levels, normally in intensely pressurised situations, are great. These demands and pressures are no different for any match official. Football is a game where the price of victory is high, but the cost of failure can be even higher. Like the players, a match official is heavily involved in success and failure. And therefore why should the Select Group Match Officials not have the same access to, and benefits from, modern performance analysis systems.

Informed accurate measures of feedback are essential for improving performance, and this emphasises the need for accurate objective analysis, which the ProZone system can provide.

Any teams’ coaching staff has a responsibility to provide the best possible feedback to their squad of players\referees. Objective analysis provides an excellent form of extrinsic feedback. ProZone provides information on a referee’s performance that is impossible to identify from the naked eye. The data provided is completely objective and therefore the coaching staffs are able to show the referee exactly “how it was.”

What is ProZone?

ProZone is regarded as the ultimate performance analysis tool, which has been developed in collaboration with top coaches in the game. It uses unique technology to retrieve positional and statistical data on every movement, of every player and official, every 1/10th of a second.

This allows the user to view the game in video, as you would see on the TV, but also in a 2-dimensional overhead view. Positioning and movement can be monitored at any point in the game. ProZone also tracks each individual to provide data on how much ground each player and official covered and at what speeds they covered it.

What is ProZone Referee?

ProZone Referee is a bespoke solution designed specifically for the PGMOL developed in conjunction with top Premiership Referees.

Based on the successful ProZone3 analysis tool, ProZone Referee has been adapted to facilitate better support, analysis and overall improvement around referee and assistant referee performances by monitoring fitness levels, positioning and decision making skills.

ProZone Referee offers the same range and quality of fitness information and data as ProZone3 but also includes special features designed to monitor the official’s exact positioning when key incidents occur, offering point-to-point proximity feedback for critical assessment.

What does the ProZone System Provide me?

ProZone provides a complete analytical breakdown of a match official’s physical and tactical performance. ProZone, as well as assisting managers and coaches in their analysis, also provides individual referees with an analysis system in which to:

  • Identify critical elements of performance
  • Accurately review performance over a period of time, using trend analysis
  • Reach targets and goals by setting benchmarks based around previous results
  • Highlight positive actions to reinforce good performance, or negative actions to aid performance enhancement.
  • Monitor fitness levels and provide data in which to organise training schedules around.
  • Give a great insight into how a game was played and how the players performed. (i.e. pace of the game and how the referee reacted to different tempos).
